Some young women browsed a jewelry stand on Broadway around Prince Street, in Soho.
There are many stands like this in this neighborhood - tables full of jewelry, art, clothing and other handmade items. You could basically walk around wearing jeans and a T-shirt one afternoon and come away with a completely different outfit.

Home to many wealthy and famous, The Dakota is a landmarked building on the Upper West Side, at 72nd Street and Central Park West.
The craggy rooftop of this building is shown in the opening scenes of Rosemary's Baby. In real life, it has been the home to celebrities including Lauren Bacall, Boris Karloff and Jason Robards. John Lennon lived here, too, and was shot outside in 1980.
Gas lanterns light the facade and there is at least one doorman at all times.

The site of major masses and burials, this gorgeous building is located just across from Rockefeller Center on Fifth Avenue.
The Cathedral was completed in the late 1800s. Pilgrims from all over the world come to visit and light a candle. The stained glass windows here are incredible works of art, never mind all the Gothic stonework.
Among the services that have been performed were the memorials for Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Babe Ruth.

On a clear day the Statue of Liberty is visible from Red Hook, Brooklyn. Above, the view looking south toward Liberty Island.
Liberty Island is a tiny island in the middle of New York Harbor. It is surrounded by large metropolitan areas, such as Manhattan, New Jersey and Brooklyn.
On the left the ferry takes shoppers from the Wall Street area to Ikea, a furnishings store in Brooklyn.

This beautiful building is one of the most visited public spaces in New York. It was almost torn down in the 1950s, to be replaced by a tower designed by I.M. Pei. Interest to replace the building continued into the late 1960's until Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis intervened.
Thank goodness. The blue vault, decorated with the constellations, is incredible to see. There are restaurants on the upper mezzanines and a whole lower floor devoted to food. A major subway station is located here, and light rail trains leave all day for Upstate New York and Connecticut.

The Manhattan Bridge spans the East River, connecting New York to Brooklyn.
This photo was taken from the Brooklyn side in DUMBO, which has a park looking out at the view. The steps are a popular gathering place for visitors during the nicer months.

Every late afternoon, rush hour descends on Midtown. The west side in particular is mobbed with commuters walking to Penn Station or Times Square to get home.
Penn Station, located on 34th Street, connects to multiple subway lines. Commuters can also travel to New Jersey, Philadelphia and Boston by train. Times Square on 42nd Street is an equally busy subway stop. People can travel to many destinations in New Jersey, upstate New York and Rhode Island, via bus.
Seventh Avenue is probably the best place to view the rush hour mayhem. Don't get trampled by the stampede!

It's easy to focus on the asphalt and tall buildings, and forget that Manhattan is an island.
The NYPD is the largest police force in the US. Its harbor patrol unit dates back to 1858. The patrol's 11 boats sweep the waters around Manhattan 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The purpose of the harbor patrol is to help those stranded in the water and to protect the edges of the city from harm.

One of many musical groups playing below ground in the subways. Nearly every large subway station has musicians or dancers to entertain the crowds which makes Jessica’s Street Performers pretty awesome week after week.
Above, at Times Square, one fellow played the tambourine, while another played a xylophone of sorts. Their music was joyful, which was nice to hear after a long day at work.
Presently, 350 subway musicians are sponsored by the 'Arts for Transit' program by the MTA. Sponsored musicians audition to qualify, and play under large banners showing their name. Many musicians are not officially sponsored - they just show up, claim a spot and play.

People play chess all year round outside in the various public parks in New York. Union Square, Washington Square Park and Bryant Park have tables set up for games.

Many of the food markets in Chinatown are open to the street. A metal roll-down door goes up in the morning and comes down at night. Stores selling produce and fish, often still live, line the sidewalks.
The benefit of the open markets is that you can see what's in each store before going in. The drawback is that everyone else can see what's in each store too, making the crowded sidewalk move even slower than usual. During the summer months, the sidewalks are filthy with debris. Open-toed shoes are not recommended.

Even in early Spring, New Yorkers are using Bryant Park during lunch hour. And not just to eat lunch.
Bryant Park located at 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue, and is surrounded by office buildings. It's so popular during the warmer months, that often you can't find a seat. Workers will even have lunch sitting on the lawn.
I caught this fellow sitting at one of the many cafe tables that are open to the public. It must have been a slow news day.

A Yankees fan took photos from 42nd Street and Broadway.
Part of Broadway in the Times Square area has been shut down for pedestrians only. This was done to help the traffic, since Broadway cuts diagonally through many streets. You can see the large planters that prevent cars from driving through.
Now you can sit in the middle of Times Square and enjoy all the brilliant lights above.

Have a craving for the UK while walking around the Village? There is almost always a line outside this tiny British-themed restaurant called 'Tea and Sympathy'.
Here you can get afternoon tea, Welsh rarebit, yorkshire pie and a concoction called 'tweed kettle pie', though not necessarily in that order. If you don't have time to eat, never fear! You can pick up a British gift basket, a jar of clotted cream or one of a dozen types of British soft drinks from their store.

Year of the Tiger, in Chinatown
Performers wearing dragon costumes visited stores in Chinatown Saturday, celebrating Chinese New Year. The dragons paraded down the street to the beat of a drum. They visited each store, dancing to chase away evil spirits.
The streets were packed with onlookers. Some vendors were selling tiny firecrackers that worked by throwing them on the pavement. There were a fireworks ceremony and outdoor dance performances as well.
Businesses in Asia often shut down for a week during this time. In New York it's just another work day.

New Yorkers love to eat outside on the sidewalk, even in the dead of winter.
It's a strange thing, since the sidewalks in New York are not necessarily all that clean. There might be cars and cyclists whizzing past, and pedestrians checking out what's for lunch. Of course, eating outside is ideal for dog owners, who don't need to leave their dogs tied up alone.
If a New Yorker has the slightest, tiniest, most remote chance of eating out on the sidewalk, he or she will!'

Fighting Fires and Saving Lives, in the West Village
Squad 18's firehouse on West 10th Street was built in 1892. Like most FDNY locations in New York, its door is bright red and decorated with a hand-painted mural.
Squad 18 specializes with retrieving hazardous materials. They fight regular fires, too. Their 'rig', or firetruck, carries 500 gallons of water to every emergency.
Sadly, the company lost seven of its men on September 11, 2001. Since they routinely risk their lives to save others, the FDNY is known for being 'New York's bravest'.

Fifth Avenue
Dramatically lit and decorated, the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 50th and 59th Street is truly a visual experience. The lights, flags and banners draw your eyes up to the sky, making avenue grand in scale.
The sidewalks are usually packed with tourists coming to window shop and visit Rockefeller Center. Among the many high-end stores there are Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman and Tiffany’s. Bring your credit card!

The Brooklyn Bridge from DUMBO

The name DUMBO stands for 'Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass'. It's a neighborhood along the Brooklyn waterfront that is known for its warehouses and cobblestone streets.
I was in DUMBO this past weekend, along with a handful of tourists. It was freezing, with brisk winds blowing over the East River. I took this photo of the Brooklyn Bridge, which is located just south of the Manhattan Bridge. The low building on the right is The River Cafe, a charming Brooklyn restaurant with an amazing view.

Amid the Clutter on St. Mark's Place

St. Mark's Place between 2nd and 3rd Avenues has long been known for being edgy and alternative. Crowding the sidewalks are a mix of stores--tattoo parlors, bars, Japanese restaurants, and street vendors selling everything under the sun. There are signs everywhere. In recent years some chain restaurants have moved in, making the area more mainstream.
The street is a popular hangout for kids and tourists, making it a relatively safe place, even at 3:00 A.M.
While I was taking photographs one recent afternoon, I was spotted by a group of kids. Looks like they were skipping school and eating pizza.

At Bella Mimo, a small store on Mulberry Street, you can get hats, t-shirts, sunglasses and souvenirs until late at night. Little Italy is known for its large Italian restaurants that cater to tourists, but there are some small stores, too.
There are many such shops scattered around New York. Very few have sales people sitting outside, minding the merchandise. When I took this photo, it must have been well below freezing with the wind chill.

New Yorkers often eat while on the go, and so there are all kinds of street food in New York. Dirty water dogs, sausages, bagels and pretzels are common street fare. There are also special food carts serving falafel, cupcakes, dumplings, crepes and homemade ice cream.
In the colder months, street carts sell roasted chestnuts. You can see the steam rising from baskets of chestnuts in the cold night air.

This past weekend, the annual SantaCon met for its 16th year. Hundreds of Santas congregated in several locations around New York City in Washington Square Park, Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn.
The rules are simple: dress like Santa Claus and bring canned donations for a food bank. Last year's SantaCon raised 1,000 lbs. of food for the needy in NYC.
SantaCon also takes place in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tokyo and Antarctica. There is much drinking and revelry involved.
