Food Truck Festival! Jessica, Tim and I had friends visiting from Texas and Australia for Labor Day weekend, and we thought what better way to show them New York street meat than through The Food Truck Festival held at Governor’s Island. Vendors included were Jamaican Dutchy Truck, Rickshaw Dumpling, Green Pirate juice, Joyride Truck, Red Hook Lobster Pound, and more!

Summer Street 2010 Where:From the Brooklyn Bridge in lower Manhattan to the East 72nd Street entrance of Central Park When:Saturday, August 21st Source: nycbikemaps.com/2010-summer-streets By:Jose We admit, we wish we would’ve told you about this sooner, but you still have one last Saturday left to take advantage of a car-free bike ride! My cousin and hubby (shown on the left) came to visit for the weekend, and what better way to show them around than through a leisurely bike tour? The street closures will occur from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, August 21st. The streets to be closed are Centre Street, Lafayette Street, 4th Avenue and Park Avenue. Alternative route back down: Instead of going back down the same way, we cut through Central Park on 72nd Street, then headed over to the bike path on the West Side Highway all the way down the Hudson River Park.
Lunch: If you’re a little hungry, I’d recommend the The Boat Basin Cafe on 79th and Riverside Drive for some grub. To be honest, the food wasn’t anything to ride home about, but the view from their open-air patio overlooking the marina was worth it!
Big Bambú Artists:Mike and Doug Stern Website:metmuseum.org Exhibit: Doug + Mike Starn on the Roof: Big Bambú When: Running until October 31, 2010 (weather permitting) Where: The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden at the Met THE SHOWCASE: Invited by The Metropolitan Museum of Art to create a site-specific installation for The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, twin brothers Mike and Doug Starn (born in New Jersey in 1961) present their new work, Big Bambú: You Can't, You Don't, and You Won't Stop. The monumental bamboo structure, measuring 100 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 50 feet high, takes the form of a cresting wave that bridges realms of sculpture, architecture, and performance. Visitors witness the continuing creation and evolving incarnations of Big Bambú as it is constructed throughout the spring, summer, and fall by the artists and a team of rock climbers. Set against Central Park and its urban backdrop, Big Bambú suggests the complexity and energy of an ever-changing living organism. It is the thirteenth consecutive single-artist installation on the Roof Garden.
THE ARTIST STATEMENT: “It is a temporary structure in a sense, but it is a sculpture—not a static sculpture, it’s an organism that we are just a part of—helping it to move along. We will be constructing a slice of seascape, like our photographs, a cutaway view of a wave constantly in motion—our growth and change remains invariable, it is constant and unchanged.” - Mike Starn

Love, Marriage & a Baby Carriage Here we are - six months after launch! Before the Five Outsiders take off for three weeks, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you and share with you what’s happening now and what’s coming next. Since launch we’ve been lucky to have a few new Outsiders join. Deena with her eclectic artists, Sasha’s interviews with her furry pals and Tara with her cool reviews of everything indie. Our regular guests such as Kitty deliver spectacular shots of our city and our wonderful editor, Connie, keeps us concise.
Week after week the best part of what we do is to get into the heart of the people who make this city exciting. From Jessica jamming with her musicians to me stopping random New Yorkers in the street, it’s endless. Whether you’re a magician, designer, acupuncturist, glass-blowing artist or poet, I can’t imagine any better way to get to know New Yorkers than doing this blog week after week.
Some changes from our side, one of which is that I am getting married this coming Saturday, May 15th. What can I say? I’m a lucky guy blessed with a beautiful man, and life couldn’t get any better. After this week we’re off to Hawaii for our honeymoon to relax by the beach and sip on some coconut margaritas.
Now the baby carriage: Jessica and hubby Jofré gave birth to a beautiful baby boy named Ellington Adrian Toledo. As his honorary New York uncle, I’ve been lucky enough to see this little fellow grow in the past eight weeks, and it’s nothing short of a miracle.
With all the wonderful changes in our lives, we thought this would be a perfect time to take a brief pause. But no worries, we’ll be back before you know it to give you more of what you love and some new surprises as well. In the meantime, we left you this week with a double-issue! On behalf of the Outsiders, we thank you once again for all the love and support, and we’ll see you soon. Lots of love,
